THEATER & ART IN THE OPEN

This summer I have the pleasure of once again working for Theater in the Open's Summer Arts Workshop, run out of the beautiful Maudslay State Park. Returning this season marks my third year involved with this amazing non-profit, a community theater company who focusses on bringing interactive performance to the public and educating young kids and teens of all ages about the powerful role of creative expression in their lives.

I am working as an art teacher this summer, planning lessons to expose the children to new mediums and materials, exploring their creativity & the nature aorund them, and many process oriented activities that encourage artistic expression over final products. Some highlights include timeless camp traditions like Fairy House Day (where each student is encouraged to make art or a fairy house solely using natural materials in the park) and Tie Dye Day. But this year, we're also bringing in new ideas, like more inspiration from artists and their work, more sensory projects, and integrating different arts (like the visual, music, and storytelling) to create new artistic experiences.

The image above was from our first session, when we adventured into Maudslay to paint landscapes, en plein air. At the end of our two week sessions, we wrap up with a final art gallery on Share Day, for the kids to see themselves artists and for families and friends to see all of the works they've created.

I can't wait to see what they create next!
